As the sister of a Marine, one of the most important issues to me is
getting the U.S. military out of Afghanistan. There have been many promises to
remove American forces from the Middle East for a while now, and as my
brother's battalion begins training for their second tour, I feel it is time to
honor that promise. I think the U.S. federal government needs to re-evaluate
the situation in the Middle East and decide if this is really a battle worth
losing so many American lives over. 2013 needs to be the year that Congress
pulls the troops out and brings them back home. There are more than enough
issues on American soil and the government needs to value and protect the lives
of its soldiers.
I am in complete agreement with your post as I feel that the war in the Middle East is one of the greatest current issues. The U.S federal government has made promises regarding the situation in Afghanistan, but has not followed through on all of these promises, which is simply unfair to American troops and their families. The war has gone on far too long and 2013 needs to be a year that sees change and improvement regarding our troops in the Middle East. I never considered the idea that "there are more than enough issues on American soil" until reading this post, but I think that's a very true and powerful statement as there are many other economic and social issues in America that the government has to address and the war in the Middle East definitely has not been helping.
ReplyDeleteI completely agree with you because in my opinion war doesn't solve problems it just perpetuates them. I also don't like war because the problems are started from our supposed "leaders" and the people who end up fighting and dying for it have nothing to do with the problem.
ReplyDeleteI completely agree with you. The government needs to honor their promises to the American people. The fact that the government has spent so much time and money focusing on this war in the Middle East (causing so much debt that we are paying for) while their own country has so many economic, social and educational issues is a problem. Hopefully soon the government will continue to focus on bringing home our troops.

ReplyDeleteI like that you focus on this issue, which at the moment, is being overlooked as we are focusing on more predominant and current issues including gun control. It is time that the troops come home, especially given the recent promises made concerning Afghanistan. It is unfair to keep anxious families waiting so long and troops out in this dangerous soil when their mission is coming to a close.
ReplyDeleteHowever, you argue that we should be focusing on our internal problems rather than the problems of other countries (if I understand correctly). I don't completely agree with this because although it is more than obvious that America has its share of problems, we will eventually resolve these, but new problems will always arise and be current. There will always be "more than enough issues on American soil," and although this brings up a separate issue of whether the United States should be a police state, I think it is our obligation as such a powerful nation to intervene in the nations that need some help.
So yes, we should bring home the troops, but no we should not do so to focus on our own problems.
