Issue 2013: Education

by Brianna Dutton
I think that one of the greatest political challenges is the public educational system in many lower income areas. In many of these areas the educational system is not preparing the students for higher education, such as college, or for successful lives. The problem is not that the students are not capable of succeeding but rather that many are not given the proper resources or equal opportunity as more privileged kids. I think that the government should focus on lowering the amount of students per school by adding more schools per district. Many times, the public high schools in lower income areas have way too many students in the school and that makes it difficult to give each student to attention that they need. Another way to help prepare these students is by opening more government funded enrichment programs that help prepare students not only academically but also socially. The younger generation is our future and if we want to have a flourishing country, we need to properly prepare our kids.

  1. I think you make a valid comment. I've witnessed first hand the results of failing education systems in low-income, urban areas. I agree that these areas do need more resources and enrichment programs to better aid them. my only question is though, were are we supposed to get the money for all this? What you describe is a rewarding but very expensive solution. I just wonder where would the funding come from for all these new schools and programs

  2. I totally agree here. But that sad part is, when the domestic economy is down, issues like education usually go on the back burner. Hopefully, when things start coming back there will be a movement to reform education because it is definitely something that needs reforming and that can't wait to much longer. As you said, the education of future generations will determine the path of our country. The issue is out there, we just need to press it some more so that it gets at least some what addressed more so then it has already been.

  3. I agree that education is a wrongfully neglected compared to other issues but because of the fact that it connects to other issues such as the economy. We need to find way to make it a priority though and I also agree that enrichment programs would be ideal but sadly everything costs money :(!
