Issue 2013: Marriage Equality & Guns

by Ryann Tucker

America is moving and changing quickly and I believe that same sex marriage is a big debate that needs to be ended. Personally, my beliefs are that love is love and you should be allowed to marry whomever you please. I come from a religious family, and I think that religion is important but the Bible is not a manual for how we should run our country. And I think that, unfortunately, religion plays a larger role than it should in our country’s decision-making process. Same sex marriage is an issue that I feel should really be a non-factor moving forward, because giving gays the right to marry isn't going to cause any true issues in our country.  We might have a few protests here and there but all in all the results of allowing same sex marriage in America can only be beneficial. That’s one of the reasons why I was so happy when President Obama formally stated that he has no problem with gays and that he's in full support of gay marriage. It shows that our country is moving forward in a positive direction.

The next issue that I feel is important and need of a quick resolution are the tightening of the U.S. policies on gun control. I feel that gun control policies should be stricter because the massive amounts of guns in US civilian hands are just not necessary. The murder rate in the US is extremely high compared to a lot of other countries that have tightened their gun policies. The recent school shooting in Connecticut has made so many people aware of the issue that is the weak American gun control system. If you’re above a certain age and not a former felon you can purchase a gun in the United States. Guns are lethal weapons and I feel that the only people that should have easy access to them are those whose job require that level of protection. I also really think that assault weapons and the other types of guns that we use in warfare should not be available to the public. In my opinion it’s completely unnecessary. I do believe that normal civilians should be allowed to have a gun if they have passed a series of psychological evaluations and have proof of proper storage in their home for the firearm. The problem with that is that once a gun is sold to a civilian then it is in circulation in the population. The government has no way of knowing what it will be used for and who's hands it will truly be in, which is very scary.

  1. I like I how you said "the Bible is not a manual for how we should run our country" and I share the same view towards same sex equality, but I do not think that it will be a priority issue in the upcoming years. As we all know, same sex marriage is an extremely controversial subject to tackle with a lot of moving pieces at play. I think that there could be some conversations and maybe some action in the upcoming years, but I don't think any significant legislation will be passed.

  2. I really agree with the statement that Ryann said about how same-sex marriage should not be an issue. I believe that same sex marriage is soemthing that is inevitable and can not be controlled in out country, so why waste your time and cause the controversy by trying to prevent it? I believe that the whole country should just accept that gay relationships are happening and have been happening for decades. The problem with our country though, is that we have many conservative people who are in the government who are completely against same sex marriage. This is why i agree with Wesley's point that no significant legislation will be passed.

  3. I agree Ryann. Same-sex marriage is a topic of debate that really should have already ended. There are a lot of religious ties to this issue which is a problem because we live in a country that is founded on diversity and having a multicultural society. Gay-marriages will not harm anyone and if anything will make a large community very happy. Our country has always struggled with issues when it comes to a minority party but I think as our generations starts to become the leaders of our nation, we will progress even faster to giving equality to the gay community.

  4. My primary confusion around the issue of same-sex marriage is the opposition to it. It's going to happen, and that has been made clear. It's already legal in some states and the number of supporters is only growing, rightfully so. What I don't get is why fight it? I don't view same-sex marriage as any different from when blacks were fighting for their civil rights, or when women were doing the same thing. It's a moral question that previously Americans refused to be moral with, and then subsequently came to their senses. THIS IS THE SAME THING. A minority fighting for their rights. Why can't we just see already that it's going to happen, and there is no point in delaying it any further.

    1. Hahaha. I like your statement that "it's a moral question that previously Americans refused to be moral with". It is essentially a same progress for a movement to experience from the take-off to its success. It takes the time and the people to make the history. I'm feeling completely positive that the day will come, sooner or later. Especially as a foreigner here, I see my country, which is not that liberal in some way, is also experiencing changes in gay's issues on different levels such as media, public opinion, celebrities, and social website. It may not be a thing in a country like America that people can openly talk about gays in tv show, but it is something in China present day. I'm happy to see that change in my country and partly I contribute it to America's attention to gay rights.
